Q. The dialup now has 56k modems, and I am using a 56k modem. Why am I not getting anything like this for connection speeds?
A. There are many areas to cover in answering this question. First is the harsh fact that due to Federal communication regulations, the actual maximum speed allowed using 56k modems is 53k. No one anywhere gets a full 56k. Then there is restrictions of speed caused by phone lines and equipment between you and the location you are calling. This area is affected by the various phone companies that may be involved with the routing of your phone call, and is beyond SBU's control. Depending on the age and capabilities of the connection at your disposal, you may be able to achieve speeds somewhere in the 40K's. But you should at least get speeds greater than 28.8K.
Q. Why is the speed faster for Internet access in my office/lab/wired dorm room faster than when I use dial-up?
A. Modem access speeds simply are not in the same class as local area network(LAN) speeds. SBU has a T1 line to the Internet, which provide the LAN and dialup modems with a "pipe" of 1.5MB(think of it as 1.5 million bits). The LAN operates at a speed of 10MB, so it is able to deliver to you a full access to the T1 speed. The fast modems are 56KB(think of it as 56 thousand bits). Since there is a large difference between 1.5 million and 56 thousand, that makes for the slower speed of Internet access via modems.
Q. How can I print out what I need to know from this site?
A. You should notice a link near the bottom of each page that has an icon of a printer that says View Printer-ready version of this page. Click this, and the page appears in a frameless view. Print the page, then click the Back button of your browser to return to the framed view of the dial-up web site.
Q. I had dial-up working before all these changes were made. What do I need to do to get it working again?
A. In short, PAP(Password Authentication Protocol) means *NO SCRIPTS*! In detail, this means cleaning scripts out of your existing dial-up setting, or not setting them up at all in your first-time setup. And it also means you no longer need to bring up a terminal window to manually enter your username and password to gain access. Please look at the OS area that is correct for your personal computer, and take note of how it appears compared to what you have now.
