Southwest Baptist University

Art Scholarships

There are two basic types of Art Scholarships available to SBU Art Majors: Performance Scholarships and Private Scholarships. All recipients must meet the eligibility requirements established by the university and published in the University catalog under the heading University Scholarships, subheading General Regulations, and any additional criteria established by the Art Department.

Performance Scholarships:

Performance Scholarships are funded by the University through the Department and can be referred to as Departmental Scholarships. These scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate outstanding ability in art. They are available to current SBU Art Majors, and High School Seniors and Transfer Students who are declaring Art as their major. To apply for Performance Scholarships use the Departmental Scholarship Application Form (a pdf document).

Private Scholarships:

The Dunnegan Scholarship, established by the Dunnegan family, recognizes the centennial year of Polk County Bank (now Mid-Missouri Bank). Five university departments award scholarships from the sizable annual earnings generated from this fund--art, communication, literature, music and theatre. To apply for the Dunnegan Scholarship you must fill out both the Private Scholarship Application Form & the Departmental Scholarship Application Form.

The Dunnegan Gallery of Art Scholarships, were established by, the Dunnegan Family of Bolivar. The Art Department Scholarship Committee selects the recipients with first preference going to Polk County art majors. Awards generally range from $200 to $600. To apply for the Dunnegan Gallery of Art Scholarships you must fill out both the Private Scholarship Application Form & the Departmental Scholarship Application Form.

Eligibility & Application Requirements:

All applications for scholarships administered through the Art Department require a portfolio review for consideration. Scholarship renewal is not automatic. Current scholarship recipients must reapply and resubmit their portfolios for review each December, in order to be considered for scholarship renewal for the next academic year. High School Seniors and Transfer Students must also submit portfolios by December. They too, must have been accepted for admission to Southwest Baptist University, scored 21 or higher on the American College Test (ACT), and have a declared Art Major. High School Seniors are also required to provide a letter of recommendation from their high school art teacher.

Portfolio Reviews:

A portfolio should consist of no less than 10 to 15 examples of quality work, with 5 to 10 examples being in one area of emphasis (drawing, painting, etc.), and no more than 20 works. Any actual work not "fixed" should have a cover sheet to protect it from being smudged. Work may also be submitted digitally on a DVD or CD. A notebook containing traditional photographs of your work is also acceptable. But remember, if the photographs are not of good quality and the committee concludes we cannot truly judge the quality of the work based on the poor quality of the photographs, an award will not be given. No scholarship application will be considered without the accompanying portfolio.

Portfolios may be hand-delivered to the SBU Art Department, sent vie an SBU Admissions Representative visiting your area, or mailed directly to the Art Department. Your Departmental Scholarship Application Form should always accompany your portfolio.

Reviewed portfolios that are hand-delivered should be picked up after January 1st, by appointment only to insure someone is present to return your portfolio to you. If your Admissions Representative delivered your portfolio, please make arrangements with them to pick up your portfolio sometime after January 1st, to return it to you. If you mailed your portforlio, you will need to provide a self addressed, stamped/prepaid envelope (SASE) for its return. If a SASE is not provided we will understand that you do not want your portfolio returned to you. All Reviewed protfiolios should be retrieved by February 1st.

The following factors are considered in determining awards:

  • Portfolio (aesthetic quality, craftsmanship, presentation);
  • Previous art background;
  • Estimated potential for further development in art;
  • Need; and
  • Academic record (including high school record and American College Test (ACT) scores for Transfer Students and High School Seniors).
