Counseling Services

The goal of SBU's Counseling Services is to provide personal, academic, and vocational counseling for students, faculty, staff and their families.


COUNSELING SERVICES PERSONNEL

Full-Time Counselor: Pearlene Breshears, MS, LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), NCC (National Certified Counselor), NCSC (National Certified School Counselor).

Half-Time Counselor: Bill Walkup, MS, LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker).

Treatment is available for, but not limited to, the following issues:

Alcohol / Drugs Abuse--Mental, Physical, Sexual, Verbal Anxiety problems
Death / Grief, among family / friends Depression Eating disorders
Family issues Gambling Illness (mental)
Illness (physical) Job unhappiness Lack of effective communication
Lack of income Marital problems Relationship difficulties
School problems Self-esteem Sexual issues
Spiritual issues Stress Thoughts of Suicide

OBTAINING SERVICES

Appointments are normally scheduled between the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm in the Department of Behavioral Sciences.  However, the counselors are also available at other times in order to best meet the needs of the counselees.  To set up an appointment, please visit the Department of Behavioral Sciences located on the second floor of Gott Educational Center, or call the Department of Behavioral Sciences at 417-328-1736.  In case of emergency, pager numbers are recorded on the Department of Behavioral Sciences's answering machine.
