Impacting the World Through Art

The Department of Art facilitates and promotes excellence in the visual creative process.

The is committed to equipping students with the conceptual, technical, and aesthetic skills needed to succeed in a career or higher education. Students thrive in a supportive, close-knit environment that not only enhances artistic expression but also builds faith. Graduates are employed in businesses and educational institutions throughout the United States and internationally.

Courses will introduce students to a broad range of creative techniques and visual media and will encourage understanding and interpretation of art within the social and historical context.

The department encourages the individual’s life-long exploration, development, understanding and production of visual forms of expression and communication, while identifying the human creative process as a reflection of God’s creative nature.

Scholarships

Performance scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate outstanding ability in art. They are available to current SBU art majors, high school seniors and transfer students who are declaring art as their major.

All art scholarships require a portfolio review. A portfolio should consist of no less than 10 to 15 examples of quality work, with 5 to 10 examples being in one area of emphasis (drawing, painting, etc.), and no more than 20 works total. Digital portfolios on a CD or DVD are preferred, but portfolios containing original pieces of art are also accepted. Any actual original work that is not “fixed” should have a cover sheet to protect it from being smudged. A portfolio containing traditional photographs of works is also acceptable.

Scholarships will be awarded upon faculty review.

Deadline for art performance scholarship submissions is February 2, 2015. To apply, please complete and submit the Art Scholarship Application.

Two private scholarships, the Dunnegan Scholarship and the Earl and Gloria Shell and Sharon Shell Garrison Scholarship, are also available for art majors. Please contact the Office of Financial Aid at (417) 328-1822 for information regarding private scholarships.
