Courses Taught :  Principles of Biology, Biology Colloquium, Zoology, Genetics, Wildlife Biology, Faculty advisor for the biology club.

Current Research:  Murphy enjoys working on a wide variety of research problems.  Some current areas of interest include testing the efficacy of new fertilizer in forage production, measuring the impact of cattle crossing on streams, monitoring the prevalence of lyme disease in ticks, and many other areas.  PLEASE contact him if you are interested in an undergraduate research experience!

Why do you enjoy teaching at SBU?  "I am very blessed to be at SBU.   I really enjoy the level of interaction with students that working at SBU allows me to have.  I am able to interact daily with my students and am able to work with them not only on an academic, but also personal level.  I also enjoy the camaraderie that develops among the faculty and the ability to work together on integrated undergraduate research experiments."

Educational and Professional Background:  Murphy earned a B.S. in Biology from Central Missouri State University (2002), an Master of Science in Biology from South Dakota State University (2004), and a Ph.D. in Agronomy from Kansas State University (2007). 

Murphy also managed two cow-calf operation located in Kansas and currently own and operate JMK Ranch which is a 700-acre family run cow-calf operation in Hickory County, Missouri. 

Family:    Murphy is married to Katie (Ferrell) Murphy (SBU alum 2001) and they have two boys Dan and Andrew.

Faith Dedication:  The Murphysare members of First Baptist Church Humansville where he is a member of the choir and helps to teach the adult Sunday school class.
