The Social Science Education Major

Department of History & Political Science

The social science education program is open to those who meet all the requirements for admission to the teacher education program appropriate to their current class standing and who are completing the professional education requirements for teaching grades nine through twelve and earning a bachelor of science degree. The social studies school curriculum draws on the several social science disciplines making a broad, multi-disciplinary preparation essential. Thus, while history forms the core of the social science education major the basic courses in other social sciences are also required. Moreover, in addition to the various professional education assessments along the way the social science education majors will be required to complete the Major Field Examination in history during their senior semester when they are not scheduled for student teaching.

Education courses required for certification are offered by the Department of Education. For a detailed breakdown of the social science education major and its required supporting work, please visit The Social Science Education Program Planner. Still more pertinent information is readily available via the "Course Offerings", or "Advisement", links from the menu at the left above. Or you may visit the PDF online section of the Catalog dealing with Social Science Education.
