Mountain View Campus Tour
Hi. I’m Larry Price. I’m the director here at SBU’s Mountain View Campus. And if you will just tag along, I will give you a little tour of what we’ve got here in Mountain View.
We are standing in the middle of what used to be the office of Sharp Lumber Company. Sharp Lumber Company owned this building and the building right next to us. They went out of business in the early 1970’s, SBU came along in the late 1980’s and leased this building. So this building that you’re standing in was a former Sharp Lumber Company.
I’m Judy Kenaga and I’m the first contact you will see when you come into SBU. Students come in here quite a lot needing to have questions answered or purchase books or whatever their problems are. I usually am the one they come to first. I also answer the phone, so if you call, I will be the one that you will be talking to.
Hi, I’m Paula Raney, I do the financial aid for the campus at Mountain View. I also handle the loans. I also do the student enrolling; help them enroll in their classes for each semester. I check on any of the problems they have. I help faculty with their assigning students’ grades and help them with Web Advisor. My title is the Coordinator of Students and Faculty Services.
We have three or four photographs here in the hall. These were taken by just an amateur photographer here in Mountain View. Her name is Carolyn Daniels. This one right here is of Alley spring, probably the most photographed location in the Ozarks. She took these and just gave them to us, so we have displayed them in the hallway here. If you have never been to Alley spring, it is just about 32 or 33 miles from here, it would be worth the trip.
The railroad came through Mountain View right here. In fact, where that tree is, is where the railroad was. And almost every year, I will find railroad spikes that come up out of the ground, so it is kind of a reminder of what used to be here. That building right there was the warehouse that belonged to the lumber company. They had a dock that came right out to the railroad tracks. That building was a warehouse and we just transformed it into classrooms.
We are standing in the middle of what has become known in Mountain View as ____ Park. It is a little unusual. Right behind me here is a replacement of the original jail in Mountain View. At one time it was across highway 17, and then it was moved here. This little building actually site on SBU property now, so we now own our own jail. Currently it is unoccupied, but this park has become a park and it is maintained by the Mountain View garden club.
We are standing in room 9 of Founder’s Hall. Founder’s Hall was named based on the three founders of the school here. These three people were influential in starting SBU here in Mountain View; Ron Hall, Joe Duncan, and Wayne Wood. Their names appear on a plaque out there in the entryway of the building. This building is part of the former city of Mountain View maintenance. This was actually the city maintenance barn, building, shed, or whatever you want to call it. The concrete walls still remain as you can see right here. We kept the walls; we simply replaced the roof and turned this into four classrooms, including a science lab. That’s Founder’s Hall.
This is the library in the Mrytle Glass Learning Center. It has around 10,000 items in it; plus a few periodicals, newspapers, and a small vertical file collection. We have a special room that is used a lot by the education students called a curriculum lab. It is used for studying. We also have these computers here that you can use the databases that are subscribed to by the library, or you may also look on the internet for information.
Well, we are back to where we started our tour. I want to invite you to give us a call, or better yet, you can check us out on our Web-Site that is now on the SBU Web-Site. Our advisors are available all during the summer. They are here most of the time. Sometimes, it just takes a phone call to get them to come in. They all live here locally. Our schedules are here in the lobby. A phone call, no problem at all. We do appreciate you taking the tour with us, and we would be glad to see you in person.
