Department of Art
The department of art challenges you to develop the abilities of perception and appreciation for various forms of art. Study in this department teaches you methods of creative expression.
It gives you an opportunity to develop skills, methods and techniques for teaching others to express themselves creatively. It can also prepare you for work in the field of graphic design.
Classes in virtually all areas of contemporary art are offered in the SBU program, including drawing, life drawing, photography, sculpture, painting, fibers, ceramics, watercolors, printmaking, commercial design and illustration techniques.
As a major, you will be required to keep a portfolio of your work and present a comprehensive exhibit of work approved by the department during your senior year. You will be required to attend art exhibits at major museums during 75 percent of the semesters you attend SBU.

- The Jester Learning and Performance Center at SBU houses the department of art and the Driskell Art Gallery. This beautiful state-of-the-art facility features spacious classrooms, computer labs, studios, art galleries and more.
- You will find that SBU graduates from this department have a very high job placement rate (approximately 90 percent). Most students seeking to enter graduate school are easily admitted due to the quality of their education at SBU.

If you desire the flexibility to pursue a variety of career fields, you may wish to major in one or more of the communication arts. The various programs offer a unified approach to the field of communication, allowing you to select courses from many areas to complete your educational experience.
You will have the opportunity to use state-of-the-art facilities designed for the study and practice of effective communication skills. Features include practice rooms for student use, the Vines Media Room, workspace for recording and utilizing feedback in speech preparation, and the television studio housed in the Hutchens Library.

- Since 1969, SBU’s forensics team (speech and debate) has consistently earned superior ranking and has won many sweepstakes championships at the national tournament. The team has won the national championship of the Pi Kappa Delta National Forensics Tournament for 18 of the last 26 years.
- You will find that SBU graduates earning a teaching certificate and seeking a teaching position have an almost 100 percent job placement rate. Speech and theatre teachers are in very high demand. Each year this school receives a large number of inquiries from school districts wanting to hire SBU speech communication and theatre education graduates.
- If you have a passion for the stage, the SBU theatre program offers you several major production opportunities throughout the year, including comedies, musicals and dramas. Auditions are open to students of all majors. Students have the opportunity to get involved not only in acting, but also in writing, directing, costume designing, stage work and advertising.

The Department of Language and Literature embraces a mission to create a Christian atmosphere in which students are taught to write effectively, comprehend the nature of language, understand literary traditions, think critically about literature and language, and foster an awareness of humankind.
The Department of Language and Literature accomplishes its mission by

- teaching you to understand the nature of the English language;
- teaching you to read, analyze, and evaluate literary expressions; and

- The department faculty diligently seeks to use their teaching of literature as an opportunity to integrate Christianity into their teaching. You will receive a quality education that incorporates high moral standards, as well as a passion for language learning.
- As an English major you are eligible to work in the department-sponsored University Writing Center, which provides help to all university students with the composition and editing of writing assignments.
Department of Music [top]
Study in the department of music includes development of performing, listening and creative skills, as well as the understanding of the historical, theoretical and spiritual content of music. This prepares you to minister, teach or perform as a musician.
In addition to admission to the University, if you wish to pursue a music degree, you must be admitted to the department of music. All new students (freshmen and transfer students) are first admitted to the department as pre-music majors. Upon completion of specific courses and evaluation by the music faculty, pre-music majors may be formally admitted into a music degree program.

- Because of the thorough preparation in all aspects of music, you will be very capable and qualified to enter the music industry, education, full-time ministry or graduate work/seminary upon graduation.
- The Meyer Recital Hall seats approximately 300 and has two grand pianos, an organ and a harpsichord. Student recitals are held in this beautiful facility.
- You may use the music computer lab to work on ear training, arranging, composition and music technology classes. Both Macintosh and PCs are used, as well as synthesizers and MIDI work stations. In addition, SBU offers a Roland Piano Laboratory consisting of 12 electric piano stations for use in classroom instruction.
