Department of Athletic Training
The profession of athletic training is designed for the care and prevention of injuries associated with athletic participation.
As a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) you will be able to work in a variety of settings including professional, collegiate, secondary school, clinic-based and educational institutions.
The athletic training program at SBU is a Christ-centered academic program providing a high quality educational curriculum and challenging clinical experiences. This will help prepare you as an entry level athletic training student to become skilled, dedicated, ethical and caring, as you pursue the athletic training profession.
MAJOR:
Athletic Training
Did you know?
- With this degree, the opportunity exists to combine Christian missions with sports medicine service, both nationally and internationally.
- The Meyer Wellness and Sports Center and the Plaster Athletic Center are great compliments for the athletic training program. As a student, you will spend many hours in these new facilities gaining practical, hands on experience in your clinical education.
- You will gain valuable hands-on experience while working with SBU’s NCAA Division II sports teams.
Department of Biology [top]
The Southwest Baptist University department of biology offers you a fundamental and practical knowledge of living organisms, their relationships to each other and their places in the scientific world.

Biology
Did you know?
- Every faculty member in the department of biology has earned a doctoral degree.
- The Wheeler Food, Nutrition and Science Facility is a modern, well-equipped center for students in SBU’s science programs. The building boasts a greenhouse, large aquariums and well-equipped labs.
- Class size, especially in upper level classes, is fairly small, allowing faculty to know students on a more personal level. SBU not only prepares you academically but will seek to help you grow stronger in your faith.
- You will find SBU biology graduates are consistently in high demand in various career fields. Many SBU biology graduates are accepted in graduate programs and health professions schools at rates significantly above the national average. The SBU Pre-Health Careers Committee serves to counsel you and to assist you in obtaining information pertinent to professional school admission requirements and admission testing procedures.
Department of Chemistry and Physics [top]
The SBU department of chemistry and physics program prepares you for graduate work in chemistry, for a career as a chemist or physicist, for professional school in the health sciences or for other technical areas, which require a strong chemistry, physics or other physical science background. The program also participates in the Unified Science Certification program for preparing middle or high school science teachers.
SBU’s Pre Engineering program is in cooperation with the University of Missouri Rolla. If you choose this option, you will attend SBU for the first two years before transferring to UMR to complete a B.S. degree in one of many engineering programs available.

- For many years SBU has had a nearly 100 percent job placement rate for graduates seeking teaching positions. Based on current national trends, SBU should continue to have great success in job placement of science education graduates.
Department of Mathematics [top]
The SBU Department of Mathematics pursues excellence by:
-offering you quality instruction from a Christian perspective (to non-majors to broaden their mathematical skills and awareness and to majors to prepare you for career success or further study in mathematics);
-helping you become familiar with mathematical skills and basic mathematical structures necessary for applications and interpretation of life experiences from a Christian perspective;
-preparing you for continued scholarship and positions of leadership from a Christian perspective in secondary mathematics teaching, graduate study in mathematically related fields, and employment in a global society with many problems that need solutions.
MAJOR/MINOR: Mathematics
Did you know?
- There is a growing need for mathematics teachers. For several consecutive years SBU has maintained a nearly 100 percent job placement rate for its graduates pursuing a mathematics teaching position. The combined placement rate for graduates seeking employment or entrance into graduate school is 95 percent.
- You will find that SBU’s mathematics department uses state of the art TI 83+ graphing calculators. A class in mathematics technology strives to keep students current with the cutting edge of technology.
- One of our mathematics graduates, Dr. Patricia Long ’73, became the first woman president of Baker University in 2006. Dr. Long credits her SBU mathematics education and the caring, Christian faculty for creating the foundation for her academic and administrative successes. Dr. Long says she still values the critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills she learned while at SBU.
Darrell R. Strait Center for
Integration of Science & Christian Faith [top]
As a distinctly Christian university, integrating faith with every academic pursuit is the cornerstone of an SBU education. We especially believe there are many ethical issues to address in our global society in the fields of biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics.
In this major, you will study the history and philosophy of science, Biblical hermeneutics and the integration of science and Christian faith. Working from the authority of Scripture and the assertion that Christianity is true, these programs will enable you to establish and validate Biblically based personal belief systems on the interrelations between science and Christian faith.
MAJOR/MINOR:
Integration of Science and Christian Faith
Did you know?
- Classes will follow a discussion format using the Bible as the ultimate authority on all subjects.
- SBU is one of few universities to offer a major or minor that is purely devoted to allowing students to learn how Christian faith is integrated into science.
- The Darrell R. Strait Center for Integration of Science and Christian Faith is named in honor of former dean and professor, Dr. Darrell Strait. Dr. Strait was a long time SBU employee recognized by colleagues and winner of the Missouri Governor’s Excellence in Teaching Award for his excellence in teaching and Christ-like role model.
“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
