University Success Center
The University Success Center (USC) is designed to assist first-year students and transfer students (with less than 30 transfer hours) in their transition to SBU. The USC is an academic program that coordinates the first-year experience at SBU through the University Studies courses, academic advising and collaboration with other departments.
All first-year students are required to enroll in University Seminar during the first semester and Critical Thinking during the second semester. These courses are designed to promote an understanding of a personal value system, the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college and the ability to use higher order thinking skills.
The USC faculty serves as academic advisors to all first-year students. Each student is assigned to one faculty member. The USC advisor will assist the student in developing their class schedule for the fall and spring semesters. In addition, the advisor is available to answer questions the student may have and to assist students who are struggling academically.
Collaboration with Other DepartmentsThe USC works with the Office of Admissions, the Office of Student Life and the academic colleges to provide programs and services that will assist the first-year student in transitioning to SBU in all areas - academically, spiritually, socially and physically - and in developing a sense of belonging and identification with SBU.
