Benefits of Undergraduate Research at SBU

By participating in undergraduate research, you will gain hands-on experience by working with a faculty mentor who is an expert in your area. Together, you will apply current methods and techniques to push past the boundaries of knowledge on a topic. From this experience, you will expand your resume with a presentation over your research findings in a conference setting which will increase your career readiness and competitiveness for graduate and professional schools.

Undergraduate Research is
“a mentored investigation or creative inquiry conducted by undergraduates that seeks to make a scholarly or artistic contribution to knowledge.”
– Council for Undergraduate Research (CUR)

Minor in Undergraduate Research

Students who perform undergraduate research at SBU will have the opportunity to complete the Minor in Undergraduate Research along with their declared major. Open to all undergraduate students on the Bolivar campus, the Minor in Undergraduate Research teaches students how to perform research and provides an avenue for them to complete a project and present their findings. The Minor is composed of four components:

SBU Students conducting research at KU

Skill Building

Classes that fit this component provide the most general skills needed to perform research across all fields. Students will choose an applicable class from the statistics and communication categories.

SBU Students working with HeLa Cells in lab

Research Techniques

The class from this component will teach students research concepts and strategies for designing a research project of high quality.

SBU Student presenting Research at Sigma Zeta

Applied Research

In this component, students will have the opportunity to implement original research in their area under the mentorship of a faculty member.

SBU Students at Sigma Zeta Conference

Presentation

For the final component, students will present their findings at the SBU Undergraduate Research Symposium held in the spring semester.

Students who complete the Minor in Undergraduate Research will be more competitive for graduate school, professional school, or a career of research.
